What is cleaning in place?

It is an automated method of cleaning the interior surfaces of pipes, vessels, equipment, filters and associated accessories, without major disassembly. CIP is commonly used for equipment such as pipes, tanks and fills.

Broadly speaking, the CIP process consists of the following steps:

  • Prewash: A mild cleaning agent is used to remove larger residue and visible contaminants.
  • Primary Cleaning: A stronger cleaning agent is used to remove tough residue and bacteria.
  • Rinse: Clean water is used to remove residual cleaning agents.
  • Sanitization: A sanitizing agent is used to kill bacteria and other microorganisms.
  • Final rinse: Clean water is used to remove residual sanitizing agent.
